III isnt just an engine, it is actually the processor for canon digital cameras. In reality the usefulness of know which processor a camera has, is usually only good with in the same manufacturer. As someone who recently graduated with a photography minor, I recommend you invest early in a good camera if you plan on pursuing photographic interests. This way you get used to the camera, its functions, and can experiment to find your style. With photography advancing towards digital at such a fast pace, I recommend investing in a digital camera, although knowledge of film is quite rewarding. Try to get one with RAW capabilities. But Nikon is also a good brand. Id recommend the Canon Powershot SD1100.

Its a very small and sturdy camera, perfect for travelling. For a larger size camera that has more advanced settings, Id recommend the Powershot S5 or any similar camera. It is NOT a professional grade camera. Now, heres a few questions for you to consider.

The lens you get with the kit is also a great improvement over the previous kit lenses, which were considered mediocre at best. 40D; I can use his lenses on my camera. Anyway, I really do suggest you do some shopping around and trying out of cameras. If you already use an SLR, like I said, you are in good shape. And I know that a lot of camera stores will offer free classes when you buy a camera from them, so you can get some help using your new camera.
